Spatiotemporal Data Visualization of the U.S. Public Library Performance

Community Partner: University of Nebraska at Omaha – Center for Public Affairs Research
Year: 2019
Team Members Involved

Libraries are essential to a healthy community. A public library’s primary focus is to provide services and information to meet the needs of individuals and groups. This project collaborated with the Center for Public Affairs Research at the University of Nebraska at Omaha to analyze the public library survey data collected annually by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The library performance data from all U.S. public libraries during 2007 to 2016 were cleaned and combined from a variety of metrics. An interactive dashboard was created to provide a better way to visualize the spatiotemporal data. The dashboard displays the location of central and branch libraries upon the U.S. map, the performance of library in time series, and comparison by state. This dashboard helps data explorers answer research questions intuitively.
